Thiem will now serve to stay in the first set. T hiem was broken in his previous two service games, but he moves up here with three brilliant inside-in forehand winners.
Djokovic then sends a forehand long, and the Austrian completes a very welcome hold to Where next in this undulating set of tennis?
And Thiem takes the second one as Djokovic puts a forehand wide! Neither player can land a fatal blow as yet this set. A third missed forehand then gives Djokovic two break points at A fourth Thiem forehand error hands the Serb a second consecutive service break.
T o be fair to both men, the conditions really look horrible. Djokovic looks in control of the game at , but as in his first service game, he allows Thiem to battle back for deuce.
The Austrian then fizzes a backhand pass crosscourt winner to move up advantage and earn another break point, but Djokovic saves it when Thiem loses his patience in a long exchange and sends a forehand well wide.
Two more game points then come and go for Djokovic, the second of which is saved by an almost identical backhand howitzer up the line. After a couple more deuces but no more break points, Djokovic eventually holds in a game that lasted more than 15 minutes.
This is shaping up very nicely. He makes three forehand errors to go down and hands back the break to 15 with a missed backhand into the net.
T hat picture-book single-handed backhand I mentioned before the match? Thiem then earns a fourth break point with an inside-in forehand winner, and he takes it this time after a ludicrously long point that eventually sees Djokovic go long with a backhand!
That must have been more than 30 shots. Thiem up a break in the first set. Thiem has already won more games than he did when the pair met in Rome last month.
